Support Worker

We are looking for enthusiastic, caring, committed and motivated individuals to support adults with learning disabilities develop skills and live a fulfilling life.

You will be part of a friendly staff team and you will help the people we support to do the things they enjoy, to follow their interests and develop friendships in the local area.

The post-holder will be part of a team and will be expected to contribute to that teams overall strategy and operations and will be expected to uphold St Joseph’s Vincentian Philosophy and Values.

This post represents an opportunity for the right person to create the best possible environment for the people we support and our staff to grow and prosper as citizens in their community.

Hourly rate: £12.00 – £12.18

Key Duties

  • You will be expected to ensure the people you support receive the highest standard of support and are always treated with great dignity and respect.
  • To work at all times within the values of St Joseph’s Services and act in ways that create an inspirational, healthy and respectful environment for all.
  • To provide opportunities for people who use the services to live the lives they choose by:
    • Assisting with personal care.
    • Administration of medication.
    • Planning and/or preparing meals and snacks.
    • General domestic duties (cleaning, ironing, shopping).
    • Assisting people with their money, including paying bills.
    • Supporting people in the social activities they enjoy, such as cinema, trips, bowling, shopping, going to a football match, going for a walk, going to the theatre.
    • Providing individuals with clear, unbiased information about their rights and options in order for them to make informed decisions about their lives.
    • To assist people who use the services to develop and review their person centred support plan, setting out what they would like from life, and how to achieve their dreams.
    • Support people who use the services to maintain regular links with families and friends.
    • Support the people who use the service to attend appointments with health care professionals.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • An ability to demonstrate and put into practice.
    St Joseph’s Services core values of trust, respect, choice, friendship, inclusion, skills and hope.
  • Have or be willing to study to gain the relevant qualification appropriate to registration, ie SVQ2/3 in social care (we will support you in this).
  • Staff must secure registration with the Scottish Social Services Council within the first six months of their employment.
  • You will be part of a team so you must be able to accept guidance and direction.
  • There are times you may be working alone so must be able to respond to issues as they arise.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • You will need to keep records and write short reports on the work you have done for workers on shift after you.
  • Willingness to provide personal care with dignity for the person you are assisting (training will be given).
  • Able to work flexibly (our staff work a variety of hours, including overnight shifts or sleepovers, depending on the role).
  • Willingness to accompany people we support to enable them to participate in social activities, holidays, outings.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in relation to all aspects of your work.
  • Be honest and reliable (your support is key to people being independent).
  • Be respectful and supportive of individuals religious and cultural heritage.
    Computer literate.

 

Desirable:

  • Have, or be willing to study for:
    • Food Hygiene certificate.
    • Manual Handling certificate.
    • Emergency First Aid certificate.
    • Fire Awareness certificate.
    • Health and Safety certificate.
  • Full, clean driving licence.
